Member Employment Report

Each year, Equity prepares an Employment Report that provides an in-depth look at your work opportunities, capturing Equity engagements and contracts, member and non-member earnings, and more. The report provides us with a better understanding of our industry across the country.

Select a year to see a breakdown by genre – dance, opera, and theatre – as well as demographics of Equity’s membership.

Equity Census

Equity’s first census was developed in 2015 to better understand the demographic composition of Equity’s membership and to identify potential barriers to employment experienced by members in Equity’s jurisdiction. A second census is being conducted in 2026, marking Equity’s 50th anniversary as an Association for professional live performance artists.

Everybody Counts

Building on the work of the Equity Census, Everybody Counts is an ongoing survey, collecting and securely storing basic demographic information about members and artists working on Equity contracts. This information allows Equity to measure the impact of member diversity on engagement patterns and to lobby more effectively.

Mental Health & Wellness Survey

In 2019, Equity’s launched the Mental Health & Wellness Survey, giving members the opportunity to speak their minds on mental health issues relating to live performance work on and offstage, insurance coverage, and more. This initiative helped Equity establish support strategies for artists to sustain healthy lives in healthy careers.

Centre for Free Expression 'Whistleblower' Report

In 2020, Toronto Metropolitan University’s (then Ryerson University) Centre for Free Expression collaborated with Equity on a ‘Whistleblower’ survey of our membership about the extent of harassment (including bullying) and discrimination in the live performance industry in Canada. The survey also examined how these incidents are being addressed by Equity and lessons that can be learned to provide effective whistleblower protection and create safer and healthier workplaces.
